ARGENTINA. 1874 (Oct. 17). FROM BUENOS AIRES, franked with 5 centavos for the Argentinean territorial rate and with 30c. De la Rue (right corner fault) for the rate up to the next destination port, to be reached by mercantile steamship. Since the cover travelled by a postal steamship of the Lavarello Agency, the franking was insufficient and irregular for it did not bear the overprint ESTERO on the stamp which was anyway cancelled with DA BUENOS AIRES/COI POSTALI ITALIANI. The letter was then considered as a cover to be charged at destination and taxed with the Postage Due of 10c. + 30c. + 50c. (90c. in total). A very rare franking, unique known according to the Zanaria-Serra Catalogue (reproduced on page 294). One of the most important covers known of the ?italian? maritime mails in South America. Cert. E. BOTTACCHI.
